Amtrak travel 75% pleasant


Took the Southwest Chief LA to Kansas City with a disabled friend. Amtrak employees at LA were fabulous, especially Denise who drove the cart enabling my friend to get to right up to the train without walking. Food pretty good, service on board was great (kudos Steve and Melanie) views fantastic. BUT Kansas City employees were anything but helpful. FIrst of all, I had requested wheelchair service in KC when I made the reservation. Got out at Union Station KC into a cold wind, no wheelchair in sight, no employees available to ask. Finally found an employee who brought a wheelchair (after scolding us for not staying outside on the cold platform, remember with an elderly disabled person) then walked off with our 2 carry-on bags and left me to push the non-motorized wheelchair. Left our bags sitting by the ticketing counter to go take tickets from embarking passengers, and I had to find another employee (also surly) to ask how to get to main waiting room. THEN come to find out that the wheelchair couldn't go through most of the doors into the waiting room (the only door big enough was packed with people embarking and we couldn't get through) so my friend had to get out his walker and walk all the way to the parking area (a long way if you have trouble walking.) I liked Amtrak and the trip overall, just VERY disappointed in the attitudes and lack of helpfulness in KC. Had KC employees acted remotely like they cared, the rating would have been the highest.
